A recent training session for school nurses in Fayette County prompted nearly 90 minutes of often emotional public comment at a recent Board of Education meeting.

Nearly 30 people spoke to support or object to a recent program arranged by School Health Services Coordinator Debbie King at the request of her staff. The training, called “Understanding Gender and Supporting Transgender Students,” was conducted by Tori Smith of the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition. Some of the attendees praised the county for providing such support for students, while others called the program inappropriate.

Per its policy, the board did not respond to comments during the session.
