A northwest Atlanta man found dead inside his apartment on Monday had been tortured and strangled, according to homicide investigators.

Police found the body of 64-year-old Edward Jowers inside his ransacked apartment at the Magnolia Park complex.

"It was very brutal, very brutal," Atlanta police Det. Jarvis Jackson told Channel 2 Action News. "There were elements of torture in his death."

Jowers had apparently been dead for several days before his body was discovered in his apartment on Paschal Boulevard, a few blocks north of the Atlanta University Center.

Police said they believe robbery may have been the motive but did not say why the killer would have tortured him.
