Residents from northern Fayette County came to the July 11 Board of Commissioners meeting asking that something be done about “party houses” in their neighborhoods.

Representatives from the Northridge subdivision and nearby areas told the commissioners that owners of private homes have been hosting weddings, parties and “God knows what else,” attracting large numbers of visitors who cause problems with traffic, trash and noise. The residents want more public input regarding home rental permits. County Administrator Steve Rapson said that existing ordinances cover noise, traffic violations and unpermitted alcohol sales, and that anyone experiencing problems with an event should call the sheriff’s department.

Commissioner Eric Maxwell said the county has to address the issue of home and event rentals in a way that will withstand legal challenges, which takes time. “We’ve got to do it right when we do it,” he said.
