The Nordstrom luxury department store chain has announced it will permanently close 16 of its 116 full-line stores around the country.

The retailer operates two full-line Nordstrom stores locally at Phipps Plaza and Perimeter Mall, but it couldn’t be immediately confirmed if they are among those planned for closure.

In the metro area, Nordstrom also has four locations of Nordstrom Rack, which sells discounted goods. All Georgia Nordstrom locations have been temporarily closed since March 17. Phipps Plaza and Perimeter Mall locations are currently offering curbside pick-up service for online orders.

The retailer expects to save $150 million in the restructuring, a statement said.

Erik Nordstrom, chief executive officer of Nordstrom, Inc., said the company made quick adjustments when the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S. in early 2020.

“We’ve been investing in our digital and physical capabilities to keep pace with rapidly changing customer expectations,” said Nordstrom in a statement. “The impact of COVID-19 is only accelerating the importance of these capabilities in serving customers. More than ever, we need to work with flexibility and speed. Our market strategy helps … to get products to customers faster, and connecting digital and physical experiences with services like curbside pickup and returns.”

The retailer is preparing for the reopening of its remaining stores with safety measures for employees and customers, including social distancing, face masks, new fitting room procedures and altered hours of operations.
