The Norcross city council approved funds at this month’s council meeting to provide a maintenance plan for an American elm tree in Betty Mauldin park in downtown Norcross. An arborist inspection of the tree found no active disease, but some fungal infection among fallen leaves.

Based on the arborist evaluation, the city will contract for one year with Downey Trees Inc. for $3,423 to remove damaged or dead limbs and branches, prune healthy branches, apply fungicide and insecticides, as well as fertilize the tree.

Downey Trees was the second lowest of six bids for the work. Based on qualifications, previous history with the tree’s care and costs, the Norcross Public Works, Utilities and Parks department recommended Downey Trees for the tree maintenance.
