Following a public hearing Monday, the Norcross City Council approved a rezoning amendment to property within the Center City East area encompassing Lillian Webb Park, the Parkside Development and outparcels, as well as two lots, one on Buford Highway and the other on Britt Avenue.

The approved zoning would change the area from commercial use to a Design Concept Development District allowing for both commercial and residential development.

A number of residents expressed concern the change would allow too many apartments in the historic district.

The amendment was passed with conditions limiting the number of apartments to 100 with no new construction more than four stories tall. All developments in the area will be subject to public hearings and review by the Downtown Development Authority, the Architectural Review Board, and Planning and Zoning Board prior to review and final decision from the mayor and council.
