We know y’all love your chain restaurants, Gwinnett County, and especially the Mexican ones. There’s nothing wrong with that, really – sometimes ground beef with cheese dip on top really hits the spot.
But how about branching out a little bit every now and again? With Cinco de Mayo approaching, we’re here to help with a few non-chain (or small chain) Mexican joints in and around Gwinnett.
Live a little, you guys!

El Taco Jalisco: Yes, this one is attached to a gas station, but don't let that intimidate you. It's very non-chain and very authentic. Tripe tacos or chicken lentil soup (pictured below), anyone?
Find it at 4545 South Lee Street in Buford – right next to the Exxon.
Cinco Mexican Cantina: Got a hankering for more contemporary fare? Cinco Mexican Kitchen – which has locations in Suwanee, Atlanta and Cumming – is your place. There are traditional items on the menu, no doubt, but it also includes things like portobello tacos and braised short rib enchiladas.
The Suwanee location is at 1500 Peachtree Industrial Blvd.
Frida's: This family-owned, one-location eatery is named for artist Frida Kahlo and has a massive menu filled with both authentic fare (sweet plaintains and tacos del guero) and more Americanized options (lobster tacos).
Find it at 706 Grayson Highway near Lawrenceville.
Taqueria Los Hermanos: We're pushing the chain boundaries with this one – which has four locations – but hey, who's keeping track. Los Hermanos is a local favorite, and its website touts its "flavorful chile relleno" (pictured below), "incredible marisco burrito" and "delicious guacamole dip." Not to mention that bread pudding.
Check them out at 4760 Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn; 4955 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville; 3245 Peachtree Parkway in Suwanee; or 4418 Hugh Howell Road in Tucker.
El Rey del Taco: Ah, Buford Highway -- the not-quite-Gwinnett-but-close-enough hot spot for delicious ethnic food. El Rey del Taco is juuust across the county line at 5288 Buford Highway in Doraville, and welcomes visitors with praiseworthy tacos al pastor and plenty more.
