A Newton County deputy sheriff is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday after being injured in a single-car accident early Sunday, an official said.

Justin White, 28, of Covington, is in intensive care at Atlanta Medical Center, sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Cortney Morrison said. White was responding to a medical emergency call when the accident happened.

The Georgia State Patrol said the sheriff’s office called shortly after 2:30 a.m. for assistance with the accident investigation. White’s car was traveling south on Highway 162 negotiating a curve, according to a GSP statement.

“The right-side tires left the roadway and entered the west shoulder before re-entering the southbound lane of Ga. Highway 162,” the GSP said. “The driver lost control and eventually struck an embankment and overturned, coming to an uncontrolled rest on its roof on the south shoulder of Mote Road, facing east.”

White was freed and taken to Atlanta Medical Center, the GSP said. A Newton County deputy since 2012, White was not wearing his safety belt.
