The Hampton City Council voted at its Aug. 13 regular meeting to approve the second reading of a new ordinance amending downtown parking regulations.

The major change involves the implementation of new restrictions on overnight parking in the downtown area. Under the amended ordinance it will be unlawful to park any vehicle between 11 p.m. and 7 p.m. on all or portions of East Main Street, James Street, Cherry Street, Tom Eason Drive, and Barnett Street. The restriction also applies to the parking lot of any city-owned or operated property.

The new rules do not apply to residents of the residential units in the city’s downtown district.
