Kroger's new "Marketplace" concept -- a spin on the traditional store with more expansive offerings in several departments -- may be coming to the Lawrenceville area.

Kroger developers hope to build the new 123,000 square-foot store, as well as a fuel center and "small multi-tenant building," on 35 acres near Martins Chapel Road and Sugarloaf Parkway, a wooded property that currently holds a single-family home and the Bread of Life Food Ministry.

The Gwinnett County planning commission is expected to address the rezoning proposal during its Wednesday night meeting. The planning department has recommended approval with conditions. Studies evaluating traffic and the possible addition of a new signal would be required.

According to documents filed with the original proposal, the Kroger Marketplace location would be "one of the first within metro Atlanta" and "provide ... added amenities not typically found in a Kroger grocery store." Offerings would include a Starbucks; drive-thru pharmacy; expanded home, decor, pet, toy and apparel departments; "full-service" meat and seafood departments; "extensive natural and organic food offerings"; and an "upscale deli/bistro."

The fuel center would include nine pumps.

In other Gwinnett grocery store news, The Fresh Market is scheduled to open its 19th Georgia location in Snellville next week.
