New Friendship Baptist Church was placed on the Cobb County Register of Historic Places recently by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

Designated a historic property and landmark, the church at 1254 Villa Rica Road, Powder Springs, “constitutes an outstanding example of a structure representative of its era,” according to the county resolution.

That means a certificate of appropriateness must be obtained from the Historic Preservation Commission before any material change in appearance can be made to the church building - except for local governments, including the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Instead local governments must notify the commission 45 days before the beginning of an undertaking that otherwise would require a certificate of appropriateness to allow the commission an opportunity to comment.
