The Duluth City Council voted Monday to approve a police department request to use $8,217 in 2014 SPLOST interest for the purchase of three in-car computers. The Duluth police department has three new patrol cars that are ready to be deployed, but need in-car computers before being used for patrol.

The cost of the computers is a SPLOST eligible expenditure, but the majority of the initial 2014 SPLOST funds allocated to the police department have already been spent to purchase equipment. The small amount remaining is committed to outstanding purchase orders. However, the 2014 SPLOST funds are invested in an account that has earned over $23,000 in interest and must also be spent on SPLOST eligible projects.
