A neighbor came to the rescue of a man in a wheelchair whose southwest Atlanta house was destroyed by fire Thursday.
The fire in the 2100 block of Larchwood Street broke out overnight, Channel 2 Action News reported. Six people were in the house.
Kenneth Kemp, the neighbor, recalled how he helped the disabled man.
“The house was burning, and I ran in and grabbed him off the couch,” Kemp said.
“I put him in the wheelchair and brought him out here.”
Kemp said as the flames grew more intense, he pulled the man out of the wheelchair and further away from the house.
“The wheelchair stayed there,” he said. “I guess that’s why it burned.”
The man, whose identity is not known, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, according to Divina Mims-Puckett, an American Red Cross of Georgia spokeswoman. The man’s condition is not known.
The Red Cross has provided emergency financial assistance to others displaced by the fire to help with needs such as lodging, food and clothing, Mims-Puckett said.
Also, other Red Cross workers will be meeting with the displaced people to ensure that other emergency needs are met.
The cause of the fire is not known.
