One man was arrested after an overnight fire at an Acworth home owned by former Braves star Otis Nixon, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Bass Way. No injuries were reported, but the damage was extensive, authorities said. Firefighters were on the scene for two and a half hours.
Neighbor Lamine Diaw, 34, was arrested and charged with arson, Acworth police Chief Wayne Dennard said in a news release.
“Investigators are still working on the motive,” Dennard told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The fire apparently was the result of a dispute between Diaw and JanMike Mosley, who lives in the house, he said.
Nixon relatives Tim Pyron and Cortez Mosley returned to their home Sunday afternoon to see what belongings could be salvaged.
Dennard said Nixon’s sons have previously resided at the address and it was unclear if they were currently living at the home, which is owned by a trust under Nixon’s name. Nixon, 54, joined the Braves in 1991 and was a key player in the worst-to-first season.
JanMike Mosely, 23, told police that when he came home and found the front door on fire, he tried to put it out with a garden hose but was unsuccessful.
Police interviewed him and other witnesses at the scene before arresting Diaw, who was booked into the Cobb County Detention Center on felony arson charges Sunday afternoon, according to jail records.
