A former NBA champion and coaches from the other side of the world will be in Marietta this weekend to give children some pointers.
The free clinic will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the city’s Custer Park Sports and Fitness Center, 545 Kenneth Marcus Way.
The coaches — some from Morocco, Tunisia and Algiers — will work with children in basketball, soccer and martial arts.
The event is being put on by the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs' sports diplomacy program.
Since 2005, sports representatives have visited 58 counties to increase understanding of other cultures through sports, the agency said. Folks like world champion figure skater Michelle Kwan, Atlanta Hawks great Dikembe Mutombo and baseball legend Ken Griffey, Jr., have traveled as part of the program.
Marietta is getting ex-NBA champion Sam Vincent. He won the ring as a part of the 1986 Boston Celtics, which is widely considered to be among the best teams in league history.
He was the 12th pick of the 1985 draft and after the Celtics went on to play for the no-longer Seattle SuperSonics and then the Chicago Bulls before being selected in 1989 by the Orlando Magic in the NBA expansion draft.
The city said there’s no need to register. Just show up at the park Saturday.
