A murder suspect mistakenly released from the Fulton County Jail in October was apprehended Friday thanks to a tip from Crime Stoppers.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit worked with U.S. Marshals to arrest 32-year-old Quinton Jones of Atlanta. Jones was taken into custody without incident on Swallow Circle in Atlanta around 1:45 p.m., said Tracy Flanagan with the sheriff’s office.
The charges against Jones include murder, felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Jones had been set to go to trial for the June 2011 shooting death of La Maurice Westbrook when the district attorney’s office discovered that he had been released from jail on Oct. 30 during a status hearing.
He was released Oct. 20 as a result of time served, and the rest of his charges were nolle prosequi (unwilling to prosecute) and dead docketed according to court papers the jail received, Flanagan said.
“He was released according to lawful paper work as required,” she told the AJC. “Later, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.”
DA Paul Howard said the case had been re-indicted on July 13, 2012 to include additional charges, the AJC previously reported. He said jail officials released Jones on the original indictment instead of holding him on the newest one in the system.
