Moving in the Spirit, an Atlanta youth organization that seeks to use dance to transform the lives of children and teens, has proposed leasing and operating a city recreation center in northeast Atlanta.

According to an agenda item for this week’s meeting of the City Council Community Development/Human Resources Committee, Moving in the Spirit would lease the J.D. Sims Recreation Center, 544 Angier Ave. NE.

At no cost to the city, the group would maintain the building and provide programs for students ages 3-18 for two years, with three one-year options to renew.

The organization also would offer full scholarships for at least 20 students from the Fourth Ward and surrounding neighborhoods. The Sims Center would be accessible for regular community and neighborhood meetings.
