A motorcyclist was killed on I-20 in Fulton County on Sunday morning in a chain-reaction wreck that shut down the interstate for more than five hours.

A Chevrolet Camaro and a Chevrolet HHR were the first to collide on I-20 West near Fulton Industrial Boulevard about 4 a.m. The Camaro was traveling at a high rate of speed and hit the SUV from behind, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The impact caused both drivers to lose control, sending the Camaro into a center median wall and leaving the HHR straddling a left travel lane and the shoulder.

“After a few minutes passed, a motorcycle struck the HHR, causing the driver to be thrown from the motorcycle,” a GSP spokesman said in a statement.

An oncoming Honda Civic also clipped the HHR and began to spin before hitting the motorcyclist lying in the roadway.

The motorcyclist, identified as Jermaine Diggs, 36, of Lithia Springs, died at the scene, the GSP said. None of the others involved in the wreck were taken to a hospital by EMS.

The investigation shut down all westbound lanes of the interstate until about 9:15 a.m. While it was closed, drivers were being diverted off I-20 onto Fulton Industrial Boulevard.
