The impact of the collision caused the SUV to overturn and land on its roof, according to police.

A motorcyclist was killed Saturday in a crash that flipped an SUV on its roof on a busy Gwinnett County road.

The motorcycle’s rider, Sugar Hill resident Zachary Speir, was believed to be speeding before the collision on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard near South Waterworks Road, according to Gwinnett County police.

Speir was traveling south when he approached a northbound SUV preparing to make a left turn onto South Waterworks, police said Monday in a news release. As the SUV began to turn, the vehicles collided shortly before 5 p.m.

“The brown SUV rolled over after impact and landed on its roof,” police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said. “The motorcycle driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.”

The driver of the SUV, described by police as a 64-year-old Buford woman, was not seriously injured.

“Speed is believed to be a contributing factor to this collision,” Pihera said.

The crash remains under investigation.
