Nearly 200 additional units of student housing, along with retail, were approved 5-0 Oct. 17 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

While county staff recommended denial since commercial/institutional uses predominate the area, the Cobb Planning Commission suggested approval to the commissioners.

Also, no one voiced opposition during the Oct. 17 public hearing.

The five-story private development and parking deck will be directly across from the KSU stadium at the northwest corner of George Busbee Parkway and Big Shanty Road on almost 4.4 acres, said the applicant’s attorney Kevin Moore.

Security will be a top concern, Moore assured the commissioners, with “gated, secured access for residents and their guests only.”

This zoning will be the last student housing request that will be heard by the commissioners until at least July 31 due to their new moratorium, allowing county staff time to conduct two studies on the impact of expanding private student housing.
