Milton will unveil the second phase of the Mark Law Arboretum on Friday morning, Arbor Day in Georgia, in a ceremony at Bell Memorial Park.

The arboretum is named for the city’s longtime arborist who died of cancer shortly after the facility opened in February, 2019. The second phase consists of new trees – including a white oak, from the Georgia Tree Council – signage, and other upgrades.

A ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the park, 15245 Bell Park Drive. According to a city announcement, Mayor Pro Tem Peyton Jamison, Mark Law's widow Christine Law, Georgia Tree Council Executive Director Mary Lynne Beckley and city Arborist Sandra DeWitt will make brief remarks. Citizens are encouraged to tour the arboretum afterwards.

In related news, Milton announced that for the 11th year, the city has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation. The city said it met four requirements: having a municipal tree department, a tree ordinance, a community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance.

“In Milton, every day is Arbor Day in the sense we always try to celebrate our trees,” DeWitt said. “The Mark Law Arboretum gives residents a chance to do that, while hopefully learning something in the process.”
