The Milton police department issued a warning to residents about aggressive scammers pretending to be city employees.

In a Facebook post, the Milton police say potential scammers are claiming to be city employees telling homeowners that the city wants to check their water.

"These individuals are reported to be quite aggressive in their techniques," the police department wrote, saying the individuals knock on doors until someone answers.

The police department said they were tipped off to this potential scammer by a social media user, but no official reports have been filed.

"We posted the message to Facebook out of an abundance of caution, "Lt. Charles Barstow of the Milton Police Department told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The police confirmed no city employees are going door-to-door asking to check the water meters. Anyone contacted by scammers should contact 911.

"We're going to monitor this,"  Barstow said. "If somebody is posing as a Milton employee, we'd like to get them out of the picture."

The city of Milton's water is serviced by Fulton County.
