The city of Milton has earned an improved fire insurance rating, and the result could be lower insurance premiums for local homeowners and businesses.

Fire chief Robert Edgar said The Insurance Service Office’s Pubic Protection Classification system, which rates training, equipment and infrastructure among other factors, has lowed Milton’s rating from 4 to 2/2x. A rating of 1 is considered tops.

Edgar said insurance companies making use of the independently-developed ISO rating to set premiums by their own standards. He says residents and businesses should contact their insurance providers to determine if their premiums will change as a result.

The chief said the fire service’s work has earned the city two PPC rating reductions (improvements) since the department formed in 2007.
