The Henry County Board of Education voted Feb. 13 to phase out the Henry County Middle School campus and repurpose it for professional learning and office space. Students in that area will attend the new McDonough Middle School when it opens, likely in the fall of 2019.

Henry County Middle School’s first building opened in 1954 and there have been numerous additions since then. School system officials determined that it would cost more to upgrade the existing buildings than to build a new campus, and a new middle school has been provided for in the new school SPLOST.

The district will also be eligible for several million dollars in additional state funding by closing the school.
