The annual statewide ban on open burning begins May 1. The ban is issued by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and affects 54 counties in Georgia, including those in the metro area.
During the ban period, residents cannot burn leaves, tree limbs, forest land or use air curtain destructors for land clearing. The ban runs through Sept. 30.

The Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department has issued its annual Water Quality Report that can be read online on the county web site and will be mailed to customers next month. The report takes information from more than 1,300 tests conducted in 2010 by the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Forsyth County on the county drinking water, and lists contaminants detected. FULTON COUNTY
Shelby Steinhauer, a French teacher at Milton High School, is Fulton County's Overall Teacher of the Year for 2011-12, it was announced late Thursday. Steinhauer, the system’s High School Teacher of the Year, has taught in Georgia, New York, Washington D.C., Nepal and India. The school system also is recognizing Franklin Burns, a fourth and fifth grade teacher at Spalding Drive Charter Elementary, as Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and Jennifer Foil, a social studies teacher at Holcomb Bridge Middle, as Middle School Teacher of the Year.
