A mural with a Confederate flavor will go back on display at a metro Atlanta town hall.
The Tyrone Town Council, before a full house, voted 3-1 Thursday night to keep the artwork, Channel 2 Action News reported. The mural includes a soldier with a Confederate flag draped over his shoulder.
“With them coming out to speak like this, they deserved a vote,” said Mayor Eric Dial, who only votes in case of a tie.
A red curtain was placed in front of the mural after the Aug. 17 council meeting, when state Rep. Derrick Jackson started the debate when he objected. The mural has been on the wall for 21 years.
“This is not about history, this is not about heritage,” Jackson told Channel 2 at the time. “This is about doing the right thing.”
He was the first to speak out Thursday against the mural.
“Georgia is No. 1 in filming, $9.5 billion revenue,” Jackson said. “Tyrone is going to be a part of that. I would hate for this mural to come up again, which it will, when it relates to the filming industry.”
However, resident Greg Pearson left the meeting satisfied.
“I don’t see any logical argument for changing it,” he said, “or doing away with it.”
