A Memorial Day display featuring dozens of crosses on a Hiram city lawn was abruptly taken down because of its religious overtones, according to Channel 2 Action News.

UPDATE: Paulding County town replaces Memorial Day cross display honoring soldier after complaints | Video

The handmade crosses near Highway 92 were meant to represent the 79 Paulding County residents who died in America’s wars.

But the city took them down after someone called City Manager Barry Atkinson’s office and asked if all the fallen soldiers were Christians and if the crosses were an appropriate symbol.

“It opened our eyes that we missed something here,” Atkinson told the television station. “We immediately took corrective action.”
