Mellow Mushroom wasn’t the hippest restaurant in Decatur, but was unquestionably one of the city’s most popular before suddenly closing in May 2014 after about 15 years in the Commerce Square shopping center (actress Jane Fonda was even spotted there several times).

Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne reports this week the pizza chain, started 42 years ago by two Georgia Tech students, is returning to Decatur, probably later this year. She admitted the timeline remains vague because permits haven’t yet been submitted.

The new “Mellow” will move into 340 West Ponce de Leon Avenue, across the street from the new 315 Ponce development.

Menne said the space is roughly 3,000 square feet, slightly larger than the previous restaurant, though with a much larger outdoor patio layout.
