McDonald's makes Ga. 400 commuters day

As a part of McDonald's marketing push for their McCafe drink, they paid the way for drivers going through the tolls today. Toll workers gave out a total of 7000 McCafe coupons to drivers offering them a free hot or medium iced McCafe coffee of their choice and paid their 50-cent toll. The coupon expires June 30, 2009.

Toll workers gave out 7000 McCafe coupons to drivers, offering them a free hot or medium iced McCafe coffee and paid their 50-cent toll. The coupon expires June 30, 2009.

The McDonald's cards are good at more than 270 outlets in the greater Atlanta area.

McDonald's makes a strong push into coffee with McCafe, a line of premium coffee beverages that includes lattes, mochas and cappuccinos. The fast-food giant launched a national advertising campaign in May to back the roll-out of McCafe at its restaurants. Michelle Brown, 29, of Decatur, hands out the coupons to drivers at the toll booths.

The local operators hope to bring back regular customers and convince new customers to give their coffee drinks a try.

Loretta Miller, 43, from Douglasville hands out McDonald's McCafe coupons. McDonald's isn't the first company to pay tolls in an attempt to win over coffee customers. In 2007, Maxwell House paid tolls for commuters on Ga. 400 one day from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The local McDonald's association paid the 50-cent toll between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday. Drivers also were given a card for a free small hot McCafe coffee or medium iced McCafe coffee.
