Avondale Estates is having a public session and discussion on annexation 7 p.m. Wednesday Avondale Estates City Hall, 21 N. Avondale Plaza.

Mayor pro tem Terry Giager said the city has a crucial need for commercial property or otherwise won’t have tax base. Avondale has two commercial areas on its wish list: the 110-acre DeKalb Farmers Market property, and the 60-acre Rio Circle district, including all of Laredo Drive north of the railroad tracks.

Representatives of both areas have shown little interest in Avondale.

“It’s not true,” Giager said, “because we are an historic city, we have all these restrictions. We have to convince them we want development, and that they will pay fewer taxes in Avondale.”
