Qualifying has closed in Loganville resulting in contested races for both mayor and three council seats. Former councilman Rey Martinez will face a challenge from Donna Jones in the mayoral race. Jones is the wife of former councilman, mayor and city manager Bill Jones.

Five candidates qualified for the three at-large seats on the city council. Political newcomers Anne Coles, Lisa Newberry and Femi Oduwole join incumbent Danny Ford as well as former councilman and mayor Mike Jones for the vote. The three candidates with the highest final vote tally will earn a seat on the city council.

Voting in the municipal election is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Rock Gym Precinct, 135 Main Street.

Calvin Smyre,  were on hand for unveiling of the first statue of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday at the statehouse grounds, more than three years after Gov. Nathan Deal first announced the project.  During the hour-long ceremony leading to the unveiling of the statue of Martin Luther King Jr. at the state Capitol on Monday, many speakers, including Gov. Nathan Deal, spoke of King's biography.
