Matthew Vaughan Shackelford, a senior at The Westminster Schools, was named the 2011 state STAR student by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Shackelford picked Tim Howard, his ninth-grade percussion methods teacher as his STAR teacher. The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program recognizes Georgia high school students who excel academically. Shackelford, of Marietta, plans to attend Harvard or Princeton and was honored with a $5,000 scholarship from AT&T.
