Most schools in Marietta are holding their own in third grade reading and eighth grade math, as shown in Georgia Milestones assessments data released Friday.

Marietta City Schools, which hovers around 8,900 students, has 11 schools.

Dunleith Elementary School had the highest increase from 2017 to 2018 on the percentage of its students deemed at least proficient in language arts, which was up 33.2 percent.

Scoring “proficient” or “distinguished” on Georgia Milestones means a student is ready to move on to the next grade level. Scoring “developing” or “beginning” signifies that a student is not ready to move on. Eighth grade is considered a critical point for students’ understanding of math, and third grade a critical point for students’ reading proficiency.

“The (Dunleith) teaching staff was intentional about how they used past academic data and meticulous about how they offered targeted interventions to every single student in need of support,” said Marietta City Schools superintendent Grant Rivera.

Marietta’s sole middle school had a 2.9 percent increase of proficiency on the math assessment, from 27.8 percent proficient or higher in 2017 to 28.6 percent in 2018.
