Bells Ferry Park at 2334 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta has been renamed Marine Lance Corporal Squire “Skip” Wells Park in his memory by Cobb County officials.

During a terrorist attack, Wells died saving many lives and defending an armed forces recruitment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee on July 16, 2015.

Wells left Georgia Southern University to join the military and wanted to be a drill sergeant, according to a county statement.

He spent many hours in the park as a child and enjoyed spending time there with family and friends.

A Cobb County native, Wells was a graduate of Bells Ferry Elementary School, J.J. Daniell Middle School and Sprayberry High School.

Since his passing, Wells has been honored in many ways, including the renaming of the post office at 2886 Sandy Plains Road to the “Marine Lance Corporal Squire ‘Skip’ Wells Post Office Building.”
