Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward had a Marietta park named in her honor by a 7-0 vote of the Marietta City Council Wednesday “for her outstanding achievements and her contributions to the City of Marietta and community.”
Widow of the late Oscar-winning actor Paul Newman, Woodward, 85, grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood where the new park is located at 195 Blackwell Lane.
Woodward won the Academy Award for Best Actress for “The Three Faces of Eve” (1957), was nominated for Best Actress three more times and won the Emmy Award twice for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for “See How She Runs” (1978) and “Do You Remember Love?” (1985).
Married to Newman for 50 years until his death from lung cancer in 2008, Woodward had three daughters with him and initiated philanthropic efforts with him such as a free summer camp for ill children and their families.
The council members also agreed 7-0 to change their park-naming policy to delete language that the person would have to be deceased for three years before consideration.
However, that policy has seen exemptions in recent years with the Steve and Virginia Tumlin Park and the Betty Lou Hunter Gazebo in Brown Park.
