The Marietta City Council voted 3-2 July 13 to hold a nonbinding referendum on term limits on Nov. 8.

The question will ask if the mayor and City Council members should serve three consecutive four-year terms, beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

In support were Councilmen Stuart Fleming, Andy Morris and Johnny Walker.

Opposed were Councilmen Grif Chalfant and Philip Goldstein.

Absent was Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelly.

If the measure is approved by city voters, Mayor Steve Tumlin said he will ask the Cobb County delegation of lawmakers to consider making a city charter change in term limits through the Georgia General Assembly.

Tumlin also said he will pay for the election after being questioned by Goldstein about the cost.

Goldstein said, “We have term limits every four years when the people vote.”
