The expansion of Kennesaw Memorial Park was denied 7-0 Aug. 8 by the Marietta City Council.

Previously, the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals had approved 7-0 on June 25 the expansion by 29 acres from the present 36 acres at 1306 and 1326 Whitlock Ave. NW by Alderswood of Georgia Holdings, Inc. based in Houston, Texas.

However, homeowners of Carriage Oaks subdivision appealed the special land use permit to the City Council, declaring their opposition “on grounds of inadequate notice,” according to their July 23 letter to city officials.

Now Alderswood officials can file suit and have the matter decided by the Cobb County Superior Court or they can wait six months - instead of the normal 12 months - for reconsideration, according to Marietta City Attorney Doug Haynie.
