Along with the renovation of Marietta’s train depot, Atherton Square also is being enhanced near the Historic Downtown Marietta Square.

The plan is to upgrade pedestrian lights, improve drainage, enhance landscaping and hardscaping with benches and planters and add bike racks and public art enhancements, according to Marietta Communications and Governmental Relations Manager Lindsey Wiles.

Also, the Mountain-to-River multi-use trail will run along the west side of the Marietta Welcome Center property that will link users to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park to the north and - to the south - Smyrna, Cumberland Mall, Cumberland Cobb Community Transit Transfer Station and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Park.

Wiles said the estimated cost is $860,000 for the Atherton Square Revitalization project - funded by a $500,000 Federal Transportation Enhancement grant; $200,000 from the 2011 SPLOST and $160,000 through the 2009 Parks Bond.
