Atlanta police are investigating an officer-involved shooting late Thursday night that sent a man to the hospital.

The shooting happened shortly before midnight at the Deerfield Gardens apartments on Campbellton Road, where the officer was working an off-duty security job.

Channel 2 Action News reported that the officer, whose name has not been released, approached a man in the breezeway of an apartment building and the two started fighting.

"During that investigation, a physical altercation ensued between the officer and the subject," Atlanta police Lt. Paul Guerrucci told Channel 2. "During that altercation, shots were fired."

Ramona Benson, the business manager at the apartment, said she was confident the officer acted appropriately.

“He’s very professional,” Benson said. “I’ve worked with him here and at another property for five years and I’ve never known him to embellish or dramatize.”

She said wasn’t absolutely who the individual was in the altercation with the officer, but understood that it was likely a non-resident who had been asked repeatedly to stay away from the complex.

Witnesses told Channel 2 that the man had a gun and that the officer shot the man at least twice.

The wounded man was in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. The officer was put on administrative duty.
