Police Thursday morning were searching for the gunman who shot and wounded a man at a gas station in northwest Atlanta.

The shooting happened shortly before 6 a.m. at a Shell station on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway at I-285.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was alert and conscious after being shot in the abdomen. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

The wounded man was apparently a truck driver who had stopped at the station. Investigators had cordoned off the victim's 18-wheeler as part of the crime scene.

Police were searching a wooded area near the station for at least one suspect. Another man who investigators described as a "person of interest" was interviewed but was not taken into custody.
