A man was shot and killed Thursday night during an apparent home invasion at a Riverdale apartment, police said.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. at the Brooks Crossing complex on Taylor Road, Riverdale police said in a statement released Friday morning.

Arriving officers found the victim, 25-year-old David Rucker, lying face down in the hallway with a gunshot wound to the chest. He later died at Southern Regional Medical Center.

Rucker's wife told investigators that she and her husband were in the master bedroom watching TV when they heard someone banging on their back door.

She said her husband told her to grab the kids and stay in the master bedroom and call police.

"In doing so, she could hear a confrontation, with her husband stating his kids were present," police said in the press release. "As one of the offenders attempted to enter the kid's bedroom, she observed and could hear a struggle between her husband and one of the offenders."

Rucker's wife told police she thought there were two intruders, but only saw one, who was wearing a ski mask and gloves and was dressed in all black.

Detectives believe the intruders entered through a back window that was found open with a chair on the outside air conditioner under the window.
