Man killed teen over alleged break-in
A 30-year-old man was convicted of murder Monday in the shooting death of a teenager who gave police details from his death bed.
Carlos Donta Hamilton was found guilty of murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges for the 2008 shooting death of 17-year old Dwytree Parrish, according to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard.
Parrish was shot in the stomach in the 800 block of Dill Avenue on June 21, 2008, and an off-duty Morris Brown College police officer heard the gunshot and called 911, Howard said. As Parrish was heading into the operating room, he described the shooting suspect to investigators, who later identified the man as Hamilton.
Parrish later died. An eyewitness who had been with Parrish at the time of the shooting but left out of fear later provided details to police. Hamilton, whose sister was dating the eyewitness, believed Parrish and the witness had broken into the sister’s home and stolen money, Howard said.
Hamilton, who was later arrested, gave investigators different accounts of his involvement in the teen's death, Howard said. Hamilton claimed at one time that the gun had accidentally discharged.
Hamilton was sentenced to life plus five years in prison following his conviction.
