A 67-year-old Gwinnett County man was loitering in a parking lot when he was struck and killed by a garbage truck, police said Thursday afternoon.

Douglas Ezell was hit in the 6400 block of Dawson Boulevard, which runs alongside I-85 near Norcross, at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Cpl. Jake Smith with Gwinnett police. Ezell, of Norcross, died at the scene after being hit by the truck, which was backing up at a slow speed, Smith said.

“Ezell was loitering in the parking lot and approached the truck in a blind spot,” Smith said.

No charges are expected to be filed against the truck’s driver because the incident happened on private property, police said. Address records show Ezell was struck in the parking lot of a furniture company.

An employee at the company, whose name was not released, told investigators Ezell was seen in the parking lot nearly every day and used binoculars to look across I-85, Smith said.

“Ezell would attempt to hide his actions when approached by employees and refused to answer their questions,” Smith said.

Ezell’s actions in the parking lot had not been reported to police, Smith said. Ezell did not have a criminal record with the county’s police department.
