A man was killed on I-285 Saturday morning when a driver in the lane next to him swerved to avoid something in the road, setting off a chain-reaction crash, DeKalb County police said.

The fatal wreck occurred about 1:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes between Bouldercrest and Flat Shoals roads, DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent said.

Authorities said the driver of a Toyota Camry swerved to avoid the object in the road and struck a Nissan Altima in the next lane.

The impact caused the driver of the Altima to veer off the interstate and into a tree, Vincent said. The man, who was in his early 50s, died at the scene. His name has not been released.

Police said no charges have been filed against the driver of the Camry, but the crash remains under investigation.
