A 25-year-old man was injured Wednesday in a house fire in Cherokee County, authorities said.

Firefighters arriving to battle the 1 a.m. blaze in the 900 block of Victoria Landing Drive found the house 80 percent involved in flames, with the roof beginning to collapse, Cherokee fire spokesman Tim Cavender said.

Cavender said Ryan Burt, who lives across the street from the burning home, had gotten a ladder and helped the 25-year-old resident escape through a window above the garage.

The resident, whose name has not been released, suffered a deep gash to his thigh and was experiencing some smoke inhalation, Cavender said. He was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for evaluation.

Officials have not determined what caused the blaze, which gutted the home, but Cavender said neighbors reported hearing an explosion before the fire.
