One man was hospitalized in stable condition after being pulled from a burning apartment in northeast Atlanta Tuesday morning.

Atlanta fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said the fire broke out shortly before 7 a.m. in the 2000 block of DeKalb Avenue.

First-arriving firefighters found "dark, heavy smoke" coming from a ground-level unit, and upon entering found heavy fire and smoke conditions in one bedroom of the apartment, with a second bedroom having smoke "banking down to the floor " Bundrige said.

"Firefighters found a middle-aged male lying on his side in respiratory distress in the second bedroom," Bundrige said. The man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, was taken outside and CPR was performed. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, Bundrige said.

"We woke up because the dogs were barking," said Emily Horos, who also lives in the Candler Park Apartments. "Looked out the window and there were flashing lights and firetrucks. We got all our stuff together and got out."

The cause of the blaze, which caused fire damage to one unit and smoke damage to two others,  has not been determined.
