Man fleeing police is killed after running onto I-285

A man pulled over by Atlanta police was killed early Saturday after running onto I-285 and being struck by a car.

The man, identified as Roman Garcia, 36, was weaving as he drove on Martin Luther King Boulevard at about 1 a.m., said police spokeswoman Kim Jones.

Garcia got out of his Toyota Sienna and approached the car of the police officer who pulled him over on the overpass over I-285. The officer told Garcia to return to his car, but instead of doing so he fled, running down an embankment to the interstate.

His body was thrown 150 feet after being struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes of I-285. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not know why Garcia fled, said Jones.
