A man survived a fall into a 10-foot deep concrete drainage Friday in Acworth, but suffered a serious head injury and possibly a broken leg.

The 55-year-old man spent over 2 hours soaking in three feet of water before firefighters were called to rescue him at around 6 p.m., said Denell Boyd, a spokeswoman for Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services. He was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center at around 7 p.m. after a ladder truck hoisted him out.

"I'm sure it was cold," Boyd said. "I hope he'll be okay, but he was talking to us."

Boyd said she could not identify the man because of a federal medical records privacy law. But she said he was an employee of the county water treatment facility where the incident occurred, in the 3900 block of South Main Street.

"He was checking something and he fell in," Boyd said. She said she did not know why it took 2 1/2 hours for someone to call for help.
