A Villa Rica man narrowly escaped a fire but died of a heart attack on the way to the hospital, officials said.

The 66-year-old man was in the bedroom of his Waterford Drive home Wednesday morning when a neighbor saw smoke and called 911, Carroll County Fire Chief Scott Blue said.

Foul play is not suspected in the fire incident, Blue said.

“Just a very unfortunate accident that claimed the man’s life,” Blue said.
