Man, 67, dies in car crash in Smyrna

Feb 14, 2013

Authorities are investigating after a 67-year-old man died following a single-vehicle crash in Smyrna late Wednesday morning.

Nelson Villavicencio, of Austell, may have experienced some type of medical distress before the wreck, investigators said. The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy, police said.

Villavicencio was driving a white 2001 Hyundai Elantra westbound on the East-West Connector when he drove off the road and into the grass shoulder, hitting some trees just past the Fontaine Road intersection, Cobb police said. He was transported to WellStar Cobb Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A Cobb police officer wrecked his motorcycle about a mile and a half away while responding to the crash, Channel 2 Action News reported. A car pulled out in front of the officer on the East-West Connector at Floyd Road, police said. The officer, who wrecked while taking evasive action, was taken to Kennestone Hospital with injuries to his right leg and ankle. His name was not released.
